Andrea

Cradling her mug in her hands, Andrea asked, “After you meet with Nora, will you stick around to do any task force business?”

“Do I hear an invitation to stay longer at Casa Andrea? If so, I accept.”

He grinned. “I have one concern. I may linger a day or two so I can raise it with Marty in person.”

Martin Edwards was the FBI Special Agent from the Spokane resident agency who coordinated the task force.

“What’s bothering you?” she asked.

His grin disappeared. “The FBI crime lab is taking too long to analyze that hard drive. I bet it’s sitting on a shelf, waiting its turn.”

His words set off her internal alarm.

The crime lab was supposed to determine if whoever accessed the clinic computer and disabled the main security camera had left any incriminating information on the hard drive.

The lab was located in Quantico, Virginia, on the outskirts of DC.

Her father worked out of the Hoover Building on Pennsylvania Avenue, seven blocks west of the White House.

Had Rob found out she was the daughter of a top man at the FBI?

She chose her words carefully.

“You sound like you’re only considering having a talk with Marty. Why are you debating the idea? Doesn’t it make sense to prod him for quicker action?”

“I’m not sure prodding Marty will have any effect. He’s preoccupied by his other cases. But we feds are big on chain of command. Marty’s where I have to start.”

She registered his stress on the personal pronoun.

“Marty’s where you have to start,” she repeated. “But I’m not a fed. Are you suggesting that I use a different channel?”

“You nailed it in one.” He grinned. “You ask your old man to intervene and we’ll have lab results the next day.”

“You backgrounded me.” She thumped her mug onto the table. “What’d you do, tell your human resources people I was a potential new hire so they’d do the dirty work?”

Rob lifted his chin. “I broke no law to get that information.”

She sniffed. “You want my life story, ask me for it. Googling me is tacky.”

“Didn’t make an online search, either. On Thursday, your father dropped by my office and introduced himself.”

She blinked. “Dad drove to Maryland to see you?”

“Your father claimed other business brought him to Beltsville. I don’t know if that’s true.”

“It’s not.” She gave Rob a dark look. “My father’s sole reason for the trip was to call on you. But he’s careful. His cover story will hold up. What reason did he give for tracking you down?”

“He’d seen some paperwork indicating that I was consulting with the FBI joint terrorism task force in the inland Pacific Northwest. He wanted to touch base with me because he has a personal interest in one of the task force cases.”

“Personal?”

She sneered as she repeated the word.

Pointing a finger at Rob, she added, “You being a well-trained federal agent, you guessed right away that his personal interest probably wasn’t anti-abortion violence.”

“I suspected as much. Especially since he has your monogram and surname. The strong physical resemblance was another clue.
